Here are a few things you will be responsible for as a general bar staff member:
Preparing alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages
Whether it's beer, wine, vodka, or soft drinks, it is your job to ensure the customer receives their drinks in good time.
You will be expected to be knowledgeable about the drinks menu so that you can answer questions, so please familiarise yourself with this before starting service. If you have any questions, check with your Line Manager.
Prepare the drinks as per the measurements and ingredients provided by the client, and do not alter anything.
Checking IDs
It is vital that anyone you serve alcohol to is over 18.
To ensure this, please adhere to the retailing policy of the venue you are working at. This will be brought to your attention prior to starting service, and if you are unsure please check with your Line Manager.
Many of our clients operate using either the Challenge 21 or Challenge 25 policy. If someone is not clearly over 21 or 25 respectively, it is your duty to ensure that you check their ID. If they are under the age of 18 or cannot prove this using identification, you will need to refuse the customer and make your Line Manager aware.
The identification provided must be one of the following:
- Passport
- Photographic Driving Licence (UK/EU)
- Proof of age card with a PASS hologram
It is also against the law to buy alcohol on behalf of anyone under the age of 18. Purchases of this type are called ‘Proxy’ purchases. If a situation seems suspicious, like an adult buying a large quantity of alcohol and appearing to be buying it for someone who is underage, please do not serve them and make your Line Manager aware.
Cleaning the bar
You will be expected to maintain a clean and tidy work area throughout the assignment.
Once the bar closes, you may be required to clean the area ready for the next day.
This generally includes:
- Counting and putting away stock
- Sanitising surfaces
- Sweeping and mopping the floor
- Emptying the bins
Taking payments
Payment methods will differ from event to event. They could vary between:
- Cash
- Card
- Pre-pay tokens
Please ensure that you adhere to the authorised payment methods of that event. You will be briefed on this prior to serving customers, and if you are unsure please ask your Line Manager before starting service.
Make sure you double-check you have recorded the order correctly in the till, and are giving back the correct change.
Please see here for our tips policy.
