Contributing to National Insurance is mandatory in the UK if you are over 16 years old, and earn over £242 per week from one job. This payment will be deducted from your pre tax earnings and will be listed on your payslip.
In the 2024/25 tax year, as a category A employee:
- you pay National Insurance contributions if you earn more than £242 a week
- you pay 8% of your earnings above this limit and up to £967 a week
- the rate drops to 2% of your earnings over £967 a week.
